Guatemala’s Fuego volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, recently erupted. While travel hasn’t been advised against yet, tourists have been asked to be cautious. Scroll on to know more about this.
Mass Evacuation In Guatemala After Fuego Volcano Eruption
Located just 60 kilometres from Guatemala City, the Fuego volcano exploded, causing Guatemalan authorities to evacuate more than 300 families from the area. According to Euro News, the eruption began Sunday night and, thankfully, no casualties have been reported so far. By late Monday, the eruptive episode was declared “ended” and the volcano’s parameters returned to “normal” levels, as per the Volcanology Institute’s update.

As per the experts, the greatest danger from the volcano is not the eruption but the lahars, a ‘tsunami’ of ash, rock, mud and debris that follows. They said it can be so massive that it can potentially bury villages. According to the latest updates, while the flow of volcanic material is moderate, it is expected to increase. In 2018, the volcano eruption killed 194 people and left 234 others missing. Rivers of lava were seen pouring down the volcano at that time and the entire village of San Miguel Los Lotes was disrupted.

What Travellers Should Keep In Mind
While the Fuego volcano eruption has caused mass evacuation, travelling hasn’t officially been advised against. Tourists visiting Guatemala have been asked to stay alert and updated. Hiking around the volcano has been closed for the time being. Airlines are also operating with restrictions right now. Fearing the ash spewing from Fuego can reach up to 7,000 metres, they have decided to take caution.
