Gujarati snacks, or Farsan, are quite special. Known for their perfect mix of different tastes, they are unique, delicious and also light. And businessman Harsh Goenka agrees with us. Taking to Instagram, he talked about Mathiya and Chorafali and called them two of the most “dangerously addictive Gujarati snacks”.
Now, let’s talk about what actually makes these snacks special. Mathiya is a very thin, cracker-like snack. Made with lentil flour and mixed with warm spices like ajwain, chilli powder and a touch of sugar, it has a unique, mildly sweet and salty taste. Mathiya is not just enjoyed in Gujarat but in many North Indian regions, too.

What Is Chorafali & How Is It Made?
On the other hand, Chorafali is more unique. It is a light and fluffy snack cut into long strips. Gujarati people usually prepare it using besan and lentil flour to make a dough, which they pound heavily to make it soft. After cutting it into long strips, they fry it in a pan, where it puffs up. Right after that, they toss the strips in a sharp, spicy-tangy mixture of red chilli powder, black salt and dry mango powder.
These two snacks are traditionally made during festivals like Diwali in Gujarat. But they are also enjoyed as an evening tea-time snack on non-festive days. Harsh Goenka also shared that he cannot stop at one, calling them “sinful”. According to him, a home chef, Chaula Shah in Ahmedabad makes the best Chorafali and Mathiya.
