Woman Caught Smoking On Kolkata-Bengaluru Flight’s Washroom; Arrested

By far, in 2023, we have seen a large number of disruptive passengers who have caused disruptions in the flights. Some incidents have been such that they will be written up in the history of Indian aviation for sure. Keeping up with the trend, here is another piece of news. A 24-year-old woman was caught smoking in the washroom of a Kolkata-Bengaluru flight. The woman was later arrested for the same. 

Woman Caught Smoking Mid-Air

A woman has been arrested for smoking mid-air. She was on a Bengaluru-bound flight from Kolkata where she was caught smoking in the lavatory. The incident took place late Sunday night on IndiGo flight 6E 716. 

The woman, identified as Priyanka Chakraborty, belongs to the Sealdah district in West Bengal. The plane took off from the city of joy, Kolkata in the morning at 9 and reached its destination, Bengaluru more than three hours later. 

One of the crew members suspected that the woman was smoking in the washroom. The crew member asked her to open the door. She opened the door and on inspection, the cigarette was found in the washroom’s dustbin. The member immediately poured water into the dustbin and put out the cigarette.

She Was Declared An Unruly Passenger

The woman caught smoking was declared an ‘unruly passenger’ by the flight captain. The incident took place just 30 minutes before the flight landed to its destination. The crew handed over Priyanka Chakraborty to airport security as soon as the plane landed. 

A police complaint has been filed against her by Shankar K., assistant manager of security at Interglobe Aviation. The police have arrested her for committing an act that might have endangered others’ safety or lives. 

This is not the first time that such an incident has taken place. Just 2 days ago a man was caught smoking onboard in an Air India Delhi-bound flight. He was smoking in the lavatory of the flight, and the smoke caused the fire alarm to ring. 

The Air Traffic Control (ATC) was informed about the same. When questioned, the man admitted to being a chain smoker.
