If you were planning a trip to Italy and dreaming of digging into a plate of fresh buffalo mozzarella, then you should know that there is some trouble brewing in the land of pizza and pasta. Italy is facing a buffalo mozzarella shortage after a truckers’ protest disrupted supplies of buffalo milk to dairies in the south of the country, bringing production to a near standstill. Here’s all you need to know about this.
Why Is Italy Facing A Buffalo Mozzarella Shortage?
The protest, which began over soaring diesel prices, has hit one of Italy’s best-known cheese industries hard. According to the Associated Press, the disruption caused an estimated €3 million (around ₹30 crore) in losses in just 24 hours, as milk could not reach dairies and finished cheese could not be transported to customers.
The shortage stems from a week-long truckers’ protest in southern Italy, where drivers have been blocking roads and disrupting the movement of goods over rising fuel costs. Diesel prices have surged amid the Iran war, prompting truckers to demand government support.
The roadblocks have affected several industries, but buffalo mozzarella producers have been particularly vulnerable. Many of the dairies are located in the Campania region, around Naples, where the cheese is an important part of the local food industry.
With trucks unable to transport milk to dairies and finished products to shops, several producers have had to suspend operations. The disruption has also affected supermarket supplies, with shortages of other everyday essentials reported across parts of southern Italy.

Why Is The Shortage So Serious For Buffalo Mozzarella Producers?
Unlike products that can be stored for weeks, buffalo mozzarella depends on a tightly timed production process. Buffaloes still need to be milked even when dairies are shut, leaving farmers with fresh milk and few options for storing it.
The impact goes beyond a temporary shortage on supermarket shelves. The consortium estimated losses of €3 million in just 24 hours, with several dairies forced to close as the transport blockade interrupted production.
The crisis is also adding pressure to an industry already dealing with rising production costs. Buffalo feed, diesel, energy, packaging and transportation have all become more expensive, squeezing producers who have not been able to pass on the full increase to customers.
As per the latest update, there may be some relief in sight. On October 22, the Italian government approved additional financial support for truckers and farmers, increasing the combined tax credits for the two groups to €540 million.
Truckers in Sicily began easing their protests, while drivers in Calabria suspended their action. However, the situation around Campania, where many buffalo mozzarella producers operate, remained a concern as authorities worked to restore the movement of essential goods.

For now, the bigger concern is how quickly deliveries and production can return to normal.
