Diwali is a celebration of families coming together. But for Gujaratis, the festivities don’t stop there. The day after Diwali marks the beginning of a new year, known as Bestu Varas or Gujarati New Year. Here’s everything you need to know about its date, history, and more.
When Is Gujarati New Year?
Usually, Gujarati New Year falls right after Diwali, but this year is different. Gujarati New Year, also known as Bestu Varas or Gujarati Nav Varsh, will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 10, 2026. This day marks the beginning of Vikram Samvat 2083 in the Gujarati calendar. It falls on Kartik Shukla Pratipada, also known as Kartak Sud Ekam.
This year, it won’t fall right after Diwali because Amavasya will continue until sunrise on November 9. That’s why it will be celebrated on November 10, when Shukla Pratipada is present at sunrise. According to the Hindu Panchang, the Pratipada Tithi will start at 12:31 PM on November 9 and ends at 2 PM on November 10, 2026.

What Is The History?
Gujarati New Year has several stories associated with it. One of the story connects the day with Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Gokul. Another story connects Bestu Varas with Lord Vishnu and King Mahabali. In his Vamana Avatar, Lord Vishnu asked Mahabali for three steps of land. After covering the sky and Earth in two steps, Mahabali offered his head for the third. Pleased with his generosity, Vishnu made him the King of Patal Loka and granted him an annual visit to his kingdom.
To celebrate New Year, people start their day with puja and then visit each other’s home to exchange “Saal Mubarak” wishes. They also celebrate the occasion by enjoying sweets and snacks together.
