Hyderabad market is flooded with adulterated food items. After NCRB’s report in December, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has unearthed many food adulteration cases. From arresting fruit vendors for selling adulterated mangoes to exposing large-scale rackets where gangs were manufacturing adulterated replicas of brands like Brooke Bond Red Label, Surf Excel, and Everest spices, the GHMC has cracked down on several such cases recently. However, they believe this is still the tip of the iceberg.

According to GHMC, items like milk, tea, sugar, coffee, honey, oils, ice creams, spices, pulses, food grains, fruits, and vegetables are being heavily adulterated and sold in Hyderabad markets. They, however, have reassured the public that they’re doing everything in their power to break down this chain.

While the authorities are doing their work, we’re here to make sure you do your bit as well. Here are some Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)-approved food safety tips that you can use to test your food items before consumption.

  1. Watermelon Test: Cut the watermelon in half and rub a cotton ball on its inner parts. A normal watermelon will not leave any colour on the cotton ball. However, an adulterated one will make the ball red.
  2. Tea Leave Test: To test the authenticity of your tea leaves, take a filter paper and place the leaves on them. Then drop by drop, pour water on the leaves. If it leaves a colour streak, then the tea leaves are adulterated.
  3. Green Veggie Test: Take a cotton ball and soak it in liquid paraffin. Rub it on the outer surface of your green vegetable. If the cotton ball turns green, then your vegetable is adulterated.
  4. Green Pea Test: Add the peas to a transparent container and fill it with water. Let it sit for half an hour. If the water turns green then the peas are adulterated.
