Ride-hailing giant Uber India has been slapped with a hefty fine of ₹28,000 by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Chandigarh. This hefty penalty comes after a passenger, Ritvik Garg, complained of being overcharged by a mere ₹27 during a ride in September 2022.

The incident occurred when Mr. Garg, from Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab, booked an Uber ride from Sector 21A to Modern Housing Complex in Sector 13, Chandigarh. While the exact details of the fare discrepancy are unclear, Mr. Garg felt he was unfairly charged.

He decided to pursue the matter with the Commission, highlighting the principle over the small sum. The Commission, in its verdict, acknowledged the overcharge and ruled in Mr. Garg’s favour. While Uber was ordered to refund the ₹27, the larger penalty served as a deterrent for future transgressions.
