Delhi Metro has begun modernising all of its present Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) systems to comply with National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) services, with a completion deadline of June 2023. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has contracted with a consortium to upgrade its working system. This enables passengers to travel using QR-based tickets, account-based tickets and NFC (Near Field Communication) media.

On December 28, 2021, PM Narendra Modi introduced the NCMC services on the Airport Express Line. Any passenger from the nation may utilise this service with their NCMC-compliant RuPay debit card. The same card can be used for shopping, banking, and other activities all around the nation.

According to officials, the DMRC’s system would be able to process transactions from 23 banks using the RuPay debit cards they have issued.

The introduction of NCMC and QR-based tickets will make it possible to use metro rails and other forms of public transit throughout the nation. Additionally, passengers will also be able to use their mobile phones to enter and exit the stations. It will also push the country in the direction of a cashless economy. Currently, the Delhi Metro’s Airport Express Line, a 23-kilometre route connecting New Delhi with Dwarka Sec-21 via 6 stops, offers NCMC and QR code ticketing options at its stations.

The use of this technology will place DMRC with other major metro areas around the world. For people living in Delhi-NCR, these developments will herald a new era of travel, comfort, and increased mobility.
