If There Is A Mega Earthquake In This Region Over 100,000 Buildings Will Collapse; Claim Scientists

Delhi, India’s very own capital city, faced severe tremors just this Monday morning. The earthquake was felt in various parts of the NCR region while the epicentre was New Delhi. Since last week, a massive back-to-back earthquake swarm has released multiple M4.0 to M5.0+ earthquakes, putting the Greek islands on high alert and raising the possibility of a big earthquake. Scientists are now claiming that Istanbul in Turkey stands a huge risk of a mega earthquake that could be catastrophic.

Here’s What The Scientists Are Predicting

Scientists predict that a massive earthquake will kill millions of people in several parts of the globe. It is significant that in just two weeks, seismologists have identified almost 8,000 earthquakes in the Greek islands of Santorini. In Santorini, one of Greece’s most visited tourist spots, they have also declared a state of emergency. Furthermore, researchers are looking into nations that are prone to earthquakes, about which they have made alarming assertions.

Mega earthquakes happen in Istanbul every 250 years, according to seismic records, said Marco Bohnhoff, a specialist at the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The region has already passed the anticipated time range for another mega earthquake, as the last catastrophic earthquake occurred in 1766. Using data from multiple geological models, Bohnhoff claims that there is an 80% chance of a significant earthquake occurring in the coming decades.

These worries were also expressed by seismologist Naci Gorur, who cautioned that 100,000 structures in Istanbul are extremely vulnerable to falling in the event of a significant earthquake. According to Gorur, ‘a great catastrophe is coming, millions of people will die.’ He emphasised that the population and the local government are unaware of the extent of the threat.

Istanbul is unprepared for an earthquake of this magnitude, according to Yildiz Technical University geology professor Sukru Esray. The damage cannot be minimised due to the city’s dense population. Murat Kurum, Turkey’s minister of urban development, acknowledged that Istanbul’s infrastructure would not be able to survive a strong earthquake.
